Written by former Nashville disc-jockey Bill Naughton, Jr., (WSIX, WSM-FM) and recorded in 2017 as a demo, "You Got Me Drinking Again" leans toward classic, traditional country but still would fit nicely into a modern country radio format.
While writing this song, I was heavily influenced by listening to Hayes Carll and inspired by Merle Haggard (in the second verse, the line "the way I am" is actually the title of my favorite Merle Haggard song, written by the great Sonny Throckmorton).
Timing out at 3:24, this song sounds like it could become a hit for Kenny Chesney, maybe Alan Jackson or - dare I say - George Strait.
You Got Me Drinking Again
(words and music by Bill Naughton, Jr.)
I quit because somehow I knew,
Even though you didn't say it, you wanted me to,
So I made up my mind to say goodbye to the booze,
Cuz it didn't mean as much as being married to you,
And if I had a chance to do it over,
I'd do the same thing again...
But look at me now, the way I am,
It didn't take much time for me to find my old friend,
And get back to being wasted like i used to be,
All because I came home and caught you cheatin' on me,
And I just couldn't recover from that,
You got me drinkin' again...
-chorus-
You got me drinkin' again,
I got used to being sober.
I lost track of how long it's been,
You got me drinkin' again,
Nine years without a taste,
Maybe even ten,
But then I fell off the wagon,
You got me drinkin' again...
I'd blame myself but it's not my fault,
I tried to carry on like nothin' happened at all,
But there's never a day when it's not there on my mind,
From the time I wake up until i lay down at night,
I got this memory now that I can't erase,
You got me drinkin' again...
I'm buying the bar, the beer's on me,
I'm tryin' to convince myself it's only a dream,
And I'm almost at the bottom of this bottle of rum,
But i still got no idea how we'll undo this damage you've done,
I could forgive you but I can't forget,
You got me drinkin' again...
-repeat chorus-
-guitar solo-
-repeat chorus-
Yeah I fell off the wagon,
You got me drinkin' again...
