about
I wrote these lyrics several years ago and, like a lot of the lyrics I write, they didn't come with a melody, I'm a poet and a lyricist and words come all the time, melodies not that often. So the lyric sheet - perfectly balanced with meter, rhyme patterns and imagery - became a page in my Lyric Binder (43 lyric sheets in need of melodies) until today, Sunday June 25, 2020. While mowing the lawn on Friday I got a melody in my head and I lived with it for a few days. This afternoon I started looking through the pages in my Lyric Binder to see if I might have anything that fit this melody I had in my head. By the time I got to "H" I stopped because I realized that my lyric sheet for "Heaven Sent," which I wrote on March 24, 2019, fit this melody perfectly! And the song just flowed out of me. I think is important that the song be understood for what it is, a very simple folk song, very much like Bob Dylan would have written in the early 60s ("Tomorrow Is A Long Time"), with some Gordon Lightfoot and John Prine influences from those days and more recent influences from songwriters I admire like Hayes Carll and Tyler Childers. In the tradition of folk music, the melody is borrowed from everyone, but it came to me so I used it. I hope the lyrics resonate somehow with the listeners. It's pretty simple, but I'm proud of them...
lyrics
Heaven Sent
words and music by Bill Naughton, Jr.
By now it seems like it's been a real long time,
I think it's time to quietly slip away,
Doesn't hurt, only damages my pride
But not enough to make me want to stay...
The memories of those days when we first met,
Are always on my mind both day and night,
Miserable, I'm not close to happy yet,
I live in darkness searching for the light...
-chorus-
Whatever I do, whatever I've done,
Is or was never with bad intent,
These days I believe you were the only one,
Who possibly could have been heaven sent....
The thing to do right now is to simply leave,
And hope I find some peace around the bend,
Wish me well if you ever think of me,
I doubt that I'll be back this way again...
-repeat chorus-
